Understanding Freedom
in the United States

Understanding Individual Freedom: Responsibilities and Actions in the United States

The concept of freedom in the United States is fundamental to its national identity and is enshrined in various legal documents, most notably the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, including its Bill of Rights. Freedom is safeguarded through a complex interplay of laws, regulations, government branches, and federal departments. The federal government and its departments provide civil servants, which are career service professional employees with various expertise, to protect our Country, ensure health and safety, and to ensure freedom.

The Magna Carta, signed in 1215 in England, is a foundational document that established the principle that everyone, including the king, is subject to the law. It introduced key concepts such as the rule of law, due process, and the idea that certain rights are inalienable and cannot be arbitrarily taken away. These principles significantly influenced the development of constitutional law, including the legal foundations of the United States. In the United States, the principles of the Magna Carta are reflected in the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. For example, the concept of due process guaranteed by the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments echoes Magna Carta’s provisions that no free man shall be imprisoned, dispossessed, or stripped of rights without a fair trial (U.S. Const. Amendments V, XIV). The idea that government powers are limited and that individual rights are protected also draws heavily from the Magna Carta’s legacy. Legal scholars and historians regard the Magna Carta as a critical influence on American constitutional development, shaping notions of limited government and individual rights that are central to the U.S. legal system (Gordon, 2012). Its enduring legacy underscores the importance of the rule of law and protections against tyranny, principles that remain vital to American democracy.

The Federalist Papers also emphasize the importance of a balanced system of government built on the separation of powers, with each branch—executive, legislative, and judicial—holding distinct and limited powers to prevent tyranny. According to Federalist No. 51, the success of this system relies on each branch checking the others to uphold the Constitution and protect individual liberties (Madison, 1788).

Individual Freedom - The following is an overview of the responsibilities that ensure freedom in the United States. It is vital to understanding why, how, and when to take responsibility and take action to ensure our freedom is protected by our U.S. government. When the fundamental structure that forms our national identity is violated or destroyed, such as closing federal departments, not respecting the Constitution, terminating necessary professional expert civil servants, it is time to Take Action.

1. RESPECT FOR INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS
  • Personal Responsibility: Individuals have the responsibility to respect the rights of others while exercising their own freedoms. This includes understanding that one's freedom should not infringe upon another's right to live freely.
  • Freedom of Speech and Expression: While individuals have the right to express their opinions freely, this freedom comes with the responsibility to avoid hate speech, threats, and libelous statements. Courts have often emphasized the importance of balancing free speech with the potential harm it can cause.
2. CIVIC ENGAGEMENT
  • Informed Participation: Freedom in the U.S. includes the right to participate in the democratic process. Citizens are responsible for being informed about political issues, government activities, and candidates. This includes voting in elections, engaging in civic discussions, and staying aware of local and national issues.
  • Community Involvement: Citizens are encouraged to engage in their communities through volunteering, joining community organizations, and participating in public forums. This helps foster a healthy democracy and strengthens social bonds.
3. RULE OF LAW
  • Legal Adherence: Freedom entails a commitment to uphold the rule of law. Individuals are responsible for understanding and following laws, as legal freedoms are granted within the framework of laws that protect society and maintain order.
  • Accountability: Citizens have the responsibility to hold public officials accountable. This can be through voting, advocacy, and the pursuit of transparency in government actions.
4. EDUCATION AND CRITICAL THINKING
  • Pursuit of Knowledge: The right to freedom includes the pursuit of education and knowledge. Individuals are responsible for seeking out information, understanding historical contexts, and critically analyzing sources to make informed decisions.
  • Civic Literacy: Citizens should educate themselves about their rights and responsibilities, including constitutional rights, civil rights, and local laws.
5. RESPECT FOR DIVERSITY
  • Tolerance and Understanding: The U.S. is characterized by its diverse population. Freedom comes with the responsibility to respect and promote tolerance for differing cultures, beliefs, and backgrounds. This includes engaging in respectful dialogue and seeking common ground in a diverse society.
  • Opposition to Discrimination: Individuals have a responsibility to stand against discrimination and injustice, advocating for the rights of marginalized and vulnerable groups.
6. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
  • Contributing to the Common Good: Individuals are encouraged to use their freedoms to contribute positively to society, whether through public service, activism, or philanthropy. This spirit of social responsibility enhances community welfare and promotes a collaborative society.
  • Environmental Stewardship: With freedoms come the responsibilities of caring for the environment and future generations. This includes engaging in sustainable practices and promoting policies that protect natural resources.
7. SELF-DISCIPLINE
  • Balanced Exercise of Freedom: Freedom carries the responsibility of self-discipline—understanding when to exercise one's rights and when to respect the rights of others. This balance is crucial in maintaining a democratic society.

In essence, while freedom is a cherished right in the United States, it is accompanied by a series of responsibilities that ensure the rights of all citizens are respected and upheld. These responsibilities foster a culture of respect, civic engagement, and accountability, contributing to a vibrant democracy and a harmonious society. The balance between exercising freedom and fulfilling responsibilities is crucial to maintaining the principles of liberty and justice for all.

Governmental Structure of the United States: Necessary for Individual Freedom

The Federalist Papers, authored primarily by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay, outline the foundational principles of the United States government, emphasizing the importance of a separation of powers among three distinct branches: the legislative, executive, and judicial. This division is designed to prevent the concentration of power and protect individual liberties.

The governmental structure of the United States and its federal departments play a significant role in defining and protecting individual freedom. The fundamental structure and importance of the three branches of the United States government is vital for freedom: The Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. This system of government, often called a "separation of powers," is designed to ensure that no single branch becomes too powerful and that each branch has its own responsibilities and functions. Each branch plays a crucial role in upholding democracy and ensuring that government serves the people. Together, these branches and their respective agencies work tirelessly for the welfare of the American people, ensuring that government operates transparently, fairly, and effectively. This also includes departments that are responsible for, but not limited to, air and water quality, food quality, food inspection, training food inspectors, regulation; safe roads, vehicles, buildings, products, education, finance, to highway development and maintenance, local streets, sidewalks, signs, lighting, and their maintenance, air and water quality, safe medication, inspectors, certification, quality control, etc. Understanding their roles highlights the importance of civic engagement and the continuous effort to hold our government accountable to its citizens.
