Journaling and Reflection
Stories and Reflection = Powerful Tools for Resilience

Stories and reflection are powerful tools we can use to build resilience. They help us process emotions, remember our strengths, and imagine new ways to protect and strengthen our communities. This page offers prompts and exercises to support your family and community in building hope, courage, and solidarity.

1. Downloadable Journaling Prompts

The following prompts can be used to inspire your thoughts, conversations, and stories. Feel free to write, draw, or share with others.
  • My Safe Space:
    Describe a place, activity, or tradition that makes you feel safe and strong. Why is it important? How can you share this with your family?
  • My Community’s Strengths:
    What skills, stories, or traditions does your community have that help us stay united and resilient? How can we use these to protect ourselves?
  • A Time I Helped Someone:
    Recall a moment when you helped or supported someone. How did it make you feel? How did it help your community?
  • My Resistance Plan:
    Imagine your neighborhood needs to stay safe during difficult times. What small actions can you take to help? (e.g., sharing stories, helping neighbors, staying informed)
  • Family or Personal Resilience Story:
    Ask your family members to share a story of a challenge they overcame. Write or draw what you learned from their experience.

2. Family and Community Reflection Exercises

Sharing, Talking, & Listening:
Gather with family or neighbors and take turns sharing stories of resilience, hope, or resistance. Listen deeply and celebrate each other's strength.

Practice Self-Care:
Remember to practice self-care among adults and children.


Create a Resilience Tree:
Draw a tree on a large piece of paper. Write or illustrate qualities, skills, or stories that make your community strong on the branches or roots. Reflect on how these elements help us stand tall together.


Cultural Reflection:
Discuss cultural traditions, songs, or stories that have helped your family or community stay connected during tough times. Plan a family storytelling night to share these traditions with loved ones.


Action Reflection:
Think about small steps you can take today to support your community’s safety and well-being. Write or draw these actions and commit to doing them.

3. Share Your Stories
Your voice matters. If you feel comfortable, share your story of resilience, hope, or resistance with our community. Your story can inspire others and help build a collective sense of strength. Please note: Respect your privacy. Feel free to share anonymously or with only your family or community if you prefer. You can also print your story anonymously, and post it on community bulletin boards.
