Department of Justice

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is a federal executive department responsible for overseeing the enforcement of the law and administration of justice in the United States. Established in 1870, the DOJ plays a critical role in ensuring that the legal framework of the nation is upheld, protecting the rights of citizens, and maintaining law and order.

However, within the first 100 days of President Trump's actions as President, have not simply degraded the credibility of the Department of Justice; they represent a direct and serious assault on the rule of law in the United States (Rosenzweig, 2025). Prior to President Trump's actions, the following includes the key functions and areas of focus for the DOJ:

1. Enforcement of Federal Laws: The DOJ enforces federal laws related to a broad range of issues, including civil rights, immigration, drug trafficking, organized crime, and white-collar crime. It also investigates and prosecutes violations of federal statutes.
2. Criminal Justice Administration: The department oversees federal law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). These agencies work to prevent and investigate criminal activity and enforce federal laws.
3. Legal Representation: The DOJ represents the United States in legal matters, including cases involving the federal government, and provides legal advice to the President and other executive branch agencies. It handles litigation on behalf of the government in various civil and criminal cases.
4. Civil Rights Enforcement: The Department works to protect individuals’ civil rights by investigating and enforcing laws against discrimination and hate crimes. The Civil Rights Division focuses on issues such as voting rights, housing discrimination, and police misconduct.
5. National Security: The DOJ plays a critical role in national security matters, addressing threats such as terrorism and espionage. It coordinates with other federal agencies to ensure the security of the nation while respecting civil liberties.
6. Drug Policy and Enforcement: The DOJ is involved in formulating and implementing policies related to drug enforcement and combating drug abuse. The department supports initiatives aimed at reducing drug-related crime and addiction.
7. Victim Services: The DOJ provides support and services for victims of crime, including funding for victim assistance programs and resources to help victims navigate the criminal justice system.
8. Community Programs: The department engages in various initiatives to promote public safety and community engagement, including programs that focus on youth, gang prevention, and crime reduction.
9. Policy Development and Research: The DOJ conducts research and collects data on crime and criminal justice issues to inform policy-making and improve the effectiveness of the criminal justice system.
10. Judicial Coordination: The Department works closely with the federal judiciary and monitors the justice system to ensure fair administration of justice for all individuals.

In summary, the U.S. Department of Justice is a vital institution for the enforcement of laws and protection of rights within the United States. Through its various divisions and agencies, it plays a critical role in maintaining the rule of law, promoting public safety, and ensuring that justice is served for all citizens.
