News Alert: Our First Amendment Is Under Attack — Take Action Now!

8/3/2025

The current administration's actions threaten to silence dissent and undermine the core principles of our Constitution. Similar to the Nazi regime led by Hitler, the 2025 Trump administration has progressively adopted authoritarian methods—diminishing civil liberties, suppressing opposition, and centralizing authority—significantly endangering democracy and all American citizens (see recent news). The recent unconstitutional arrests of international students and scholars—including Mahmoud Khalil, Rümeysa Öztürk, Badar Khan Suri, Mohsen Mahdawi, and others—shows the danger to Americans. These individuals were forcibly taken from their homes and communities by force by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) without notice, with their legal status threatened and their lives upended. Many of these actions appear to be retaliatory, targeting individuals for exercising their protected right to free speech
Our First Amendment guarantees the right to advocate for Palestine, Israel, or any cause, and even to criticize our own government. These rights are fundamental and constitutionally protected. However, the current administration continues to threaten to erode these protections, setting a dangerous precedent that no one is safe from government overreach simply for expressing their views. We must draw a clear line: our freedom of speech must be defended, and those who seek to silence it must be stopped.

That’s why The CIRCLE joins the ACLU in their efforts to defend our constitutional rights. Together, we are calling on members of Congress to stand up for free speech and to oppose legislation that punishes noncitizens for exercising their First Amendment rights. In addition, visit Support Immigrant Rights.

Now is the time to act. Call your members of Congress today and demand they:
  • Vote NO on any legislation that punishes noncitizens for exercising their First Amendment rights.
  • Stand up for free speech and protect the rights of all individuals, regardless of immigration status or political opinion.
Our democracy depends on it. The fight to preserve our First Amendment rights is a fight for the soul of our nation. Don’t let fear and repression win.

Contact Congress now—your voice is needed more than ever.
Speak out for justice. Defend free speech. Protect our democracy.

From Nazi Surveillance to Modern Authoritarianism: Lessons and Warnings for the 2025 United States

8/1/2025

Like the Nazi regime under Hitler, the 2025 Trump administration has increasingly embraced authoritarian tactics—eroding civil liberties, silencing dissent, and consolidating power—posing a grave threat to democracy and all Americans

Nazi Germany’s control over its population was achieved through a multifaceted approach that systematically eroded civil liberties and established an extensive surveillance system. While overt methods such as propaganda and public displays of power played a significant role, the regime also relied on a complex network of covert techniques to monitor, suppress dissent, identify, and maintain total control. This included identification measures to dehumanize and categorize people to isolate and eventually destroy these groups. In this discussion, we will also explore how certain strategies employed by the Nazi regime bear similarities to practices observed in the current administration in the United States, highlighting enduring and dangerous patterns of authoritarianism and repression. The following are also based on reports from those who have been detained and are under current monitoring under the Trump administration's ICE tactics. These are dangerous times in the United States. We use that name loosely, because traditionally, the United States was a nation governed by the people and for the people. However, as of 2025, that is no longer the case. The government no longer represents the will of the people. Rights and freedoms are eroding, and choices are disappearing. It’s a very dangerous situation.

Nazi Regime

Erosion of Civil Liberties: The Foundation for Surveillance. The Nazi regime's ability to monitor and control the population stemmed from the systematic dismantling of fundamental rights. Immediately following Hitler's appointment as Chancellor in 1933, the government suspended key civil liberties, including freedom of speech, press, and assembly (Kershaw, 1993). Criticism of the regime became illegal, effectively silencing opposition. This erosion of democratic norms created a climate of fear and self-censorship.

Trump Regime

Dismantling of fundamental rights under the U.S. Constitution, including government support of civil liberties, including freedom of speech, equal opportunities, freedom of the press, assembly, silencing opposition, removal of democratic freedom norms, putting fear into people, communities, and businesses.
The Evolution of Nazi Surveillance: From Legal Decree to Fear Tactics"
In consolidating their control, the Nazi regime issued the Reichstag Fire Decree on February 28, 1933, which granted extensive powers to the police. This decree authorized arbitrary searches, seizures, and the detention of political opponents without trial (Perry, 2015). It effectively abolished privacy protections and played a crucial role in suppressing dissent across Germany. Building on this legal foundation, the regime expanded its surveillance apparatus through the activities of the Gestapo (Geheime Staatspolizei). Established in 1933, the Gestapo operated both openly and clandestinely, infiltrating communities, workplaces, and even family units. They relied heavily on informants, cultivating a vast network of civilians who reported suspicious activities. The Gestapo conducted interrogations aimed at extracting confessions and denunciations, often without judicial oversight, which fostered an atmosphere of pervasive fear and repression (Benz, 1999).
Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice
  • Ending the Moratorium on the Federal Death Penalty: This policy reversal signals a move toward increased severity within the justice system, potentially reflecting a broader stance on harsh punishments. Such actions could be viewed as a message of toughness intended to deter crime (The New York Times, 2023).
  • Prioritizing the Most Serious Offenses: A memorandum from the Attorney General encourages federal prosecutors to pursue charges with the harshest penalties, including the death penalty or long mandatory minimum sentences. Critics argue this could lead to higher incarceration rates and diminished judicial discretion (Department of Justice, 2023).
  • Expanding Policing Powers and Reducing Accountability: An executive order directs the Attorney General to broaden efforts to shield officers accused of misconduct, increase funding for law enforcement and prisons, and potentially end federal consent decrees with police agencies. Such measures may weaken oversight and embolden problematic policing practices (ACLU, 2023).
  • Deploying Military Resources in Domestic Law Enforcement: The administration has tasked the Attorney General and Secretary of Defense with developing plans to deploy military personnel and equipment for domestic policing. This escalation raises concerns about civil liberties and the militarization of law enforcement (Vox, 2023).
  • Threatening State and Local Officials: The federal government has threatened to prosecute officials who do not cooperate with federal law enforcement efforts, creating pressure and potential intimidation at the state and local levels (The Washington Post, 2023).
  • Restricting Funding for Violence Prevention: Congress and the President have enacted legislation prohibiting Byrne-JAG federal funding from being used for violence prevention programs. Critics warn this could undermine community-based efforts to address root causes of violence and increase community fears (Congressional Research Service, 2023).
  • Criminalizing Homelessness and Mental Illness: An executive order encourages states to criminalize homelessness and mental health issues, undermining evidence-based solutions and risking increased incarceration of vulnerable populations, as highlighted by the Prison Policy Initiative (Prison Policy Initiative, 2023).
Informants and Denunciations: The Nazi regime cultivated a widespread network of civilian informants motivated by fear, ideology, or personal gain. People were encouraged to report suspected opponents, leading to a culture of suspicion and self-censorship. This network extended into workplaces, neighborhoods, and even religious communities (Fest, 1997).
The risk continues as ICE tries to collaborate using the U.S. military and local police for support, and hiring community members.
Concentration Camps: The establishment of concentration camps, beginning with Dachau in 1933, served as a brutal tool of repression. Political opponents, Jews, Roma, and other targeted groups.
The Trump administration received approval for $45 billion over four years to expand immigrant detention. This funding allows ICE to double its detention capacity, enabling the detention of over 100,000 individuals per day—equivalent to approximately 36.5 million Americans each year, and 140 million over four years. This means about 1 in every 9 or 10 people in the U.S. is expected to be detained or imprisoned without due process.
Identification badges
  • Jewish Badge: German authorities reintroduced the Jewish badge during the Nazi era, forcing Jews to wear a yellow, six-pointed star with the word "Jude" (Jew) prominently displayed on their outer clothing. This measure was used to stigmatize, humiliate, segregate, and control the movements of Jews, and facilitated their deportation to ghettos and killing centers.
  • Concentration Camp Badges: A system of identification badges was implemented in concentration camps for various categories of prisoners, such as political prisoners, criminals, "asocials", homosexuals, and Jehovah's Witnesses. These badges, often in the shape of colored inverted triangles, were sewn onto prisoner uniforms and helped guards identify the alleged grounds for incarceration.
The Use of Tattooed Numbers in Nazi Concentration Camps. In addition to identification documents and badges, the Nazis employed tattooed numbers as a means of monitoring and controlling prisoners, particularly within the Auschwitz concentration camp complex. This practice served multiple purposes:
  • Dehumanization: The tattoos symbolized the prisoners' loss of individual identity, reducing them to mere numbers in the eyes of their captors. Prisoners were compelled to memorize and respond to their assigned numbers, which further stripped away personal identity and fostered a sense of dehumanization (Berenbaum & Roth, 2002).
  • Identification: The tattoos provided a permanent form of identification, especially crucial after death when clothing or other personal effects might be removed or destroyed. This helped the SS maintain accurate records of prisoners and accounted for bodies, particularly during periods of high mortality (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, 2020).
  • Preventing Escape: The tattoos also facilitated the identification and recapture of escapees, although some accounts suggest this was not their primary purpose (Benz, 1999).
  • Trump administration ICE Electronic Monitoring has not been implemented on detainees.  A daily cost of over $500,000 per day from U.S. tax payers.  Monitoring are restricted to 75 miles of travel from their homes, with 24/7 updates, and the detainee is responsible to ensuring fully charged, always within range, unable to get wet or shower, etc. Manu further report having paid from a $5000 bail which required electronic 24/7 monitoring, or paying $10,000 for bail without electronic monitoring. Only to find once paid $10,000, the detention center said it was not written you need an electronic monitoring system (despite paying extra).
  • Detainees, mostly citizens and those here legally, from Asian, Black, Hispanic, Russian, to others as reported from detainees. All of which have been reported to have never violating any law and all have full-time jobs.
  • Many have lost 80 to 100 lbs., for those who have had the additional $5000 to $10,000 to post bail until court hearing and if they have an attorney. While meals were scheduled breakfast, lunch, and dinner, detainees have reported of many meals never came or were missed, and for those meals presented were small, not enough for a child, often overcooked, or stale.
  • Detainees also reported crowded conditions. When detainees get to know each other, suddenly some disappear as ICE says they were relocated. Putting more and more stress onto detainees.
  • All are given detention numbers instead of using names.
