Stand Up for Democracy: Call Congress and Join Peaceful Protests Against Trump's Presidential Overreach [en español] As concerns grow over President Donald Trump's recent actions that threaten the core principles of our democracy, freedoms, safety, health, and human rights, we must take immediate action. We must defend the rule of law and the constitutional freedoms that form the foundation of our nation. Senator Bernie Sanders has publicly condemned Trump’s deployment of the National Guard and Marines in Los Angeles, emphasizing that these actions are not about protests, immigration, or ICE, but are driven by a dangerous desire to expand presidential power and push toward authoritarianism. Sanders highlights troubling broader actions by Trump—including undermining constitutional responsibilities, threatening judges, suing media outlets, extorting law firms, and withholding federal funds from universities—as evidence of his authoritarian tendencies. In a federalist system, the deployment of the National Guard and U.S. Marines is a decision made by state governors, not the president. Trump’s legal justification for deploying military troops against American’s is dangerous, and his conduct—illegal raids, provoking responses, and then deploying military force—closely mirrors authoritarian rule. In response, Americans across the country are calling for unity and peaceful protests. On June 14, 2025, over 2000 events nationwide will participate in No Kings Day, peaceful protests, a movement dedicated to standing against presidential overreach and defending democratic values.
