On May 3, 1025, DC Federal Court Judge Beryl Howell issued a ruling declaring President Trump's Executive Order targeting the law firm Perkins Coie unconstitutional and null and void. Judge Howell described the executive action as unprecedented and drew a parallel to the Shakespearean idea that eliminating lawyers, who are guardians of the rule of law, is a step towards totalitarianism. The judge's decision was based on the finding that the Executive Order violated fundamental constitutional protections. Specifically, the ruling cited violations of prohibitions against government officials subjecting individuals to retaliatory actions for protected speech, using state power to suppress disfavored expression, and engaging in purely personal and arbitrary power. Based on these violations, the court found the Executive Order unconstitutional and granted the plaintiff (Perkins Coie) a favorable judgment while denying the government's motion to dismiss.
