This Thanksgiving, Resist Black Friday Deals and Stand Up for Human Rights, Dignity, and Justice11/25/2025
The Hidden Crisis of Immigration Detention The Trump administration has transformed the immigration enforcement landscape, replacing justice and compassion with fear, trauma, and inhumane treatment. Currently, approximately 50,000 people are detained by ICE at any given time, with over 3 million individuals booked into detention centers over the past decade. Americans are Under Attack! The government is seeking an extra $45 billion to expand these detention efforts further, aiming to deport one million people annually. This relentless push has created a detention system marked by overcrowding, neglect, and abuse. Detainees are kept in deplorable conditions—filthy, overcrowded facilities with insufficient access to basic necessities. They face severe shortages of food and clean water, and many are kept in cold, uncomfortable cells known as “hieleras,” which are so frigid they cause illness and suffering. Medical neglect is widespread; individuals suffer from untreated illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, with delays or outright denial of essential healthcare. Vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, children, and people with disabilities, are often mistreated—denied prenatal care, proper nutrition, or necessary accommodations like sign language interpreters and wheelchairs. Reports confirm that many detainees experience injuries, deteriorating health, and even death—2025 alone has seen at least 25 official reports of deaths in custody, with the actual toll likely higher. The year is shaping up as the deadliest in over two decades for those held in ICE detention. Table 1: Number of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Detainee Deaths by Year Illustrates the number of deaths among detainees in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) centers by year, with elevated levels shown during the 1st Trump administration in 2020 and current Trump administration so far in 2025. Retrieved November 25, 2025, from Detainee Death Reporting | ICE Numerous investigations and reports have documented systemic failures—detainees regularly face hunger, dehydration, unsafe living conditions, and abusive treatment from staff. Hunger strikes and protests have become common, as detainees demand humane treatment; unfortunately, these acts often lead to retaliation, including transfers and threats. The conditions are so egregious that experts warn this system is causing long-lasting trauma, especially for children and families—trauma that can permanently alter mental health and brain development. Corporate Support Fosters and Funds This System Incredibly, some of the world’s biggest corporations have contributed financially to the Trump administration’s policies through donations to the inaugural fund and the White House’s ballroom project. Tech giants like Google, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook’s parent company Meta, Nvidia, and OpenAI have all donated, with some pledging millions. Many of these companies also benefit from government contracts—OpenAI, for instance, has received defense work, and Palantir has secured federal surveillance contracts—further entrenching their ties to the system. Other industries, including energy, oil, and defense, such as Chevron, ExxonMobil, Lockheed Martin, and Occidental Petroleum, have contributed significant funds. Major retailers like Target, Walmart, and Home Depot are also complicit, either through direct donations or by enabling policies that support the detention and deportation machine. These corporations profit from the status quo, even as it results in suffering and injustice. What You Can Do: Be a Voice for Justice This holiday season, we can choose to stand against these injustices. Here’s how you can help:
