Power and Control Danger

Power and Control Danger

The Power and Control Wheel illustrates various tactics that abusers may use to exert control in personal relationships, particularly in the context of domestic abuse. While this model is primarily focused on interpersonal relationships, some of its concepts can be analogous to the behaviors of a U.S. President who may abuse their power or exhibit authoritarian tendencies.

The following actions describe how a President might reflect the behaviors outlined in the Power and Control Wheel and their associated dangers-Many of these have already been observed by the President:

1. PSYCHOLOGICAL MANIPULATION
  • Gaslighting and Misinformation: A President may use misinformation to distort facts or reality, undermining public trust in institutions like the media or the judiciary. This can create confusion and make it difficult for citizens to discern the truth, paralyzing informed decision-making and civic engagement.
  • Demeaning Opponents: Publicly belittling or demeaning political opponents, media, or even citizens can serve to diminish public discourse, intimidate dissent, and dissuade individuals from voicing opposition.
2. ISOLATION
  • Dismantling Institutions: Efforts to undermine or disregard the role of checks and balances—such as dismissing the judiciary or attacking independent regulatory agencies—can isolate government functions from public oversight and accountability, leading to an erosion of democratic norms.
  • Dividing Communities: Promoting divisive rhetoric can foster an atmosphere of mistrust and fear within communities, effectively isolating individuals who may disagree or seek to organize against harmful policies.
 3. ECONOMIC CONTROL
  • Favoring Corporate Interests: Policies that disproportionately benefit wealthy donors or corporate interests at the expense of the public good can create systemic economic dependence. Communities may rely on government support or contracts that can be revoked, reinforcing the idea that their well-being depends on the goodwill of the powerful.
  • Budget Cuts to Essential Services: Cutting funding for social programs, education, or healthcare can limit access to resources, increasing vulnerability among marginalized populations and leaving them reliant on the government for basic needs.
4. USING INTIMIDATION AND THREATS
  • Threatening Political Opponents: Implicit or explicit threats to investigate or prosecute political opponents can create a climate of fear that stifles dissent, making people less likely to speak out or challenge authority.
  • Rhetoric of Violence: Using violent or militaristic language to describe dissent or protests can normalize the idea of using force against citizens, leading to potential clashes and further entrenching authoritarian control.
 5. USING CHILDREN
  • Exploiting Vulnerable Populations: Just as abusers might manipulate children to exert control, a President may leverage vulnerable populations—such as immigrants or racial minorities— to rally support or distract from accountability. This can lead to policies that harm these groups while solidifying power among supporters.
 6. PRIVILEGE AND POWER DYNAMICS
  • Abuse of Executive Power: Actions taken to unilaterally bypass Congress or to issue executive orders without proper justification can demonstrate an abuse of privilege, undermining democratic processes and eroding the checks and balances designed to prevent authoritarianism.
  • Undermining Civil Rights: Attempts to suppress specific groups or populations, by restricting voting rights or civil liberties, reflects a disregard for equitable governance and can entrench systemic inequalities.

When the actions of a U.S. President resemble the behaviors illustrated in the Power and Control Wheel, it raises serious concerns about the health of democracy and civil society. Such behaviors can undermine trust in government, create societal divisions, and foster environments where dissent is stifled and citizens feel powerless. Recognizing these parallels is crucial for promoting accountability and defending democratic principles, ensuring that power is exercised in a manner that upholds the rights and freedoms of all citizens.

What Can You Do?

We urge you to contact your members of Congress today to demand action in response to the President’s troubling behavior, which mirrors tactics from the Power and Control Wheel—such as shutting down federal departments, violating the Constitution, and removing essential civil servants. These actions threaten the very foundations of our democracy and the rights, safety, and freedoms of all Americans. It is time to stand up for our Constitution and our community by calling on Congress to impeach and remove the President. Your voice is crucial—take action now to protect our democracy and ensure a safer, more just future for everyone.
